The Calico

Description

Having done some illustrations for the characters in my comic Calico Jack it occurred to me that I should practice drawing the ship a little more. After all, Calico Jack is a comic about space pirates and the ship is sort of an important detail in stories like that.
More accurately, the Calico is a spaceplane seeing as how it can fly in atmosphere and has wings and control surfaces. Jack ended up getting the Calico after it crash-landed in a junkyard he worked at and its former owner let him have it. Jack enlisted the help of his friend Alder to get it flight-worthy again. Jack later named the ship the "Calico" after a cat he found and briefly played with.
As some have pointed out the Calico's design was largely inspired by World War II era bombers, particularly the B-17, though I imagine that it was originally meant to be light cargo freighter of some kind.
For those of you that have ever been curious about my "coffee painting," here's something to know: While coffee will stain paper light brown, it's a light brown with a yellow bias. Originally I meant for the ship's main color to be grey but I used Payne's Grey which has a bit of a blue bias which reacted with the coffee to make the grey-green you see here. It's not really an inappropriate color given the overall design so I just left it as it is. Just a bit of trivia to file away for later use

Yeah, though "Tabby Jack" just doesn't sound as cool.
